Hello from AmeriCorps NCCC Team, Maple 2, here at YMCA Camp Benson!
AmeriCorps is a national service program made up of 18-24 year olds, who travel all around the country to perform service for organizations in the communities we are stationed in. On Maple 2, we have team members from all over the country, from Florida to New York (and everywhere in between) eager to make an impact! Before arriving at YMCA Camp Benson on March 13th, we spent a month training at our regional campus, in Vinton, IA, to prepare us to get things done for YMCA Camp Benson and Timberlake Playhouse.
One of the service areas that NCCC works with is environmental stewardship, and that is what we have focused on during our time in Mount Carroll, Illinois. We have spent much of our time here clearing invasive species, fallen trees and other debris to clean up around camp, helping prepare for campers this summer. We have also had the opportunity to give the new bath houses, the camp store, and the bathroom in the camp office a fresh coat of paint. At Timberlake Playhouse, the team has been focusing on clearing invasive species, and creating a new trail for community members to enjoy during the upcoming play season!
In addition to the service we are doing in Mount Carroll, we have team members working on getting the word out about AmeriCorps NCCC to the community, others recruiting future participants interested in service, project outreach liaisons finding potential nonprofit organizations or government agencies who would like to apply for a team, and a media team reaching out to local media outlets.
We are very grateful to have an amazing group willing to get their hands dirty to help our summer camp back into shape!
