One of my main goals as YMCA Camp Benson’s Director is to continually improve our overnight summer camp program. We do this by evaluating everything from activities to staff training to facilities at the end of the summer. Often changes or improvements that we make come from the feedback parents give us on our overnight summer camp survey. This is always an exciting process and is something that I look forward to every year. Here are some new and exciting improvements coming to YMCA Camp Benson in the summer of 2018.
Both bathhouses at camp were built in the 1960's and were renovated last in 2009.
Having clean and modern bathhouses at Camp Benson is a must and these buildings were in need of some upgrades. Here are the improvements that we will be making to both bathhouses this Winter and Spring:
· New counter tops and faucets
· New ceiling panels and light fixtures
· New mirrors
· A fresh coat of paint on the interior and exterior walls
· Fixing all leaky plumbing
· New screen doors and entrance doors
· Adding a water barrier between the shower stalls and the rest of the bathhouse
· New steel roofs

New Stairs to Guy’s Side
The current rebar and railroad tie stairs to the Guy’s Side of camp are going to be replaced by a new treated lumber section of stairs. These stairs will be 6 feet wide so campers can walk side by side and have conversations on the way to main camp.
Camp Store Remodel
The Camp Store is getting some cosmetic upgrades this season also. New overhead light fixtures are going to be installed to brighten up the store. The walls will be getting a fresh coat of paint and the cement floor is going to get repaired and refinished. New display racks and shelves will also be added. New in 2018: ice cream and popsicles in the camp store.
This summer we will be adding a few new activities for campers to enjoy. Geocaching using handheld GPS Units is going to be a fun new activity for all the campers that choose Outdoor Wilderness Living Skills as their morning activity group. We are also planning to add Lego Building and Magic the Gathering Club as Free Camper Choice Activity Time options. Click here to learn more about the daily schedule at YCB.
Towards the end of last summer, we had two 100-foot Cable Bridges built across the Waukarusa River. The picture speaks for itself! These are a really cool addition to camp that open up parts of our property that campers have not had access to in the past. This summer all of our campers will have the chance to go on a Cable Bridge Hike and enjoy the woods and water of YMCA Camp Benson.
